What's on it

One page, ready to fill in.

  • A "What I own" table with columns for asset and value
  • A "What I owe" table with columns for debt and balance
  • Write-in lines for net worth and change since last check
  • Undated, so you can print or duplicate it as often as you need

Who it's for

People starting to plan for retirement or financial independence, couples combining finances, those paying off debt who want to see the bigger picture, and anyone who wants a single number to check their direction.

How to use it

Getting the most from a net worth tracker.

  1. Use today's values

For savings and debts, use statement balances. For a house or car, use a realistic sale value, not what you paid. Rough but honest beats precise but optimistic.

  2. Include retirement accounts

Pensions, 401(k)s and other retirement savings count as assets, even though you can't spend them yet.

  3. Don't skip small debts

Overdrafts, store cards and money owed to friends belong in the owe column. Leaving them out flatters the number.

  4. Check every three months

Net worth moves slowly. Quarterly is often enough to see a trend without worrying about every market dip.

  5. Focus on the change, not the total

A negative net worth is common, especially with student loans or a new mortgage. The change since last check is the number that tells you you're heading the right way.

Questions

About this net worth tracker template

Need help importing it? See devices and apps or the FAQ.

How do I calculate net worth?

Add up everything you own (cash, savings, investments, property, vehicles) and subtract everything you owe (mortgage, loans, credit cards). The template has a table for each and a line for the result.

Is a negative net worth bad?

It's very common early on, especially with student loans or a new mortgage. What matters is whether it's rising over time.

How often should I track it?

Quarterly works well for most people. The planners include four net worth snapshots a year.

Does it use a currency?

No currency is printed, so it works anywhere.

Should I include my car?

Yes, at a realistic resale value. Cars lose value, so many people update it once a year rather than every quarter.
