iPad (also Android and Windows on GoodNotes 6)

    Supported

Best format: iPad portrait or landscape

Links work in read-only mode, or with a finger tap when only the Apple Pencil is set to draw. Our planners' outline also shows in the page overview.

  • Notability

    iPad

    Supported

Best format: iPad portrait or landscape

Links work when you're not writing. Switch away from the pen, or tap with your finger if only the Pencil draws.

A full PDF viewer. Links work in view mode; switch to an annotation tool to write.

  • Samsung Notes

    Galaxy tablets

    On recent versions

Best format: Android portrait or landscape

Recent versions follow internal links in imported PDFs in read mode. Keep the app updated; older versions may not.

  • Penly

    Android

    Supported

Best format: Android portrait or landscape

Built with tabbed digital planners in mind. Links work when you're not writing.

  • Flexcil

    Android and iPad

Best format: Android or iPad, to match your tablet

Links work when you're not in pen mode.

  • reMarkable

reMarkable 2, Paper Pro and Move

    On recent versions

    Best format: E-ink

Recent software versions follow internal PDF links. Update your tablet before importing, then upload with the reMarkable app.

  • Kindle Scribe

    Amazon Kindle Scribe

    On recent versions

    Best format: E-ink

Supports links in PDFs sent to it. Use Send to Kindle so you can write on the pages.

  • Boox

Boox Note, Tab and Go tablets

    On recent versions

    Best format: E-ink

The built-in NeoReader app supports PDF links. Boox runs Android, so other apps on this list may also work.

  • Supernote

    Supernote Nomad and Manta

    Usually, test first

    Best format: E-ink

Internal PDF links usually work on recent firmware. Test with the free preview first.

  • Printing

    Home printer or print shop

    No links on paper

Best format: A5, A4, US Letter or Half Letter

Printed pages can't link, of course. Printable files have a wider inner margin for hole punching and binding.

App names belong to their owners. We're not affiliated with any of them. Collanote and ZoomNotes on iPad also open hyperlinked PDFs.

The number one fix

Tap links outside pen mode

Most apps only follow links when you're not writing. With a pen selected, a tap leaves a dot instead. Switch to read or view mode, or tap with your finger if your app lets only the stylus draw.

Keep the original

Import the file you downloaded

Printing a PDF to a new PDF, or running it through some compressors, can strip the links out. Import the original download, and keep a copy of it.

E-ink

Update first, then import

E-ink link support has improved with recent software. Update your device, use the E-ink format with the E-ink Mono theme, and expect each tap to take a moment to redraw.
