Shown for iPad in the Terracotta Sun theme. Printable downloads use white paper (there's a dark mode preview below); the e-ink version is black and white.

What's on it

One page, ready to fill in.

  • A table with columns for debt, balance, rate, min. payment and target date
  • 50 squares to colour in
  • Undated, so you can print or duplicate it as often as you need

Who it's for

People with several credit cards or loans who want to see the whole picture, couples working on debt together, and anyone who finds a colour-in chart more motivating than a statement.

How to use it

Getting the most from a debt payoff tracker.

  1. List every debt, even the small ones

Credit cards, store cards, car loans, buy-now-pay-later, money owed to family. Seeing the full picture is uncomfortable but it's where the plan starts.

  2. Decide what each square is worth

Divide your total debt by 50. If you owe $10,000, each square is $200. Colour one every time the total drops by that much.

  3. Choose snowball or avalanche

Snowball pays the smallest balance first for quick wins; avalanche pays the highest interest rate first to save money. Number the debts in the order you'll attack them.

  4. Set realistic target dates

Work out a target date for each debt from what you can pay each month. Dates you can actually hit keep you going.

  5. Update balances monthly

Once a month, check your statements and update balances. Then colour your squares; that's the satisfying bit.

Questions

About this debt payoff tracker template

Need help importing it? See devices and apps or the FAQ.

How many debts can I track?

Seven rows in the table. If you have more, group small ones together or use a second page.

What's the difference from the debt snowball worksheet?

This page is an overview with a colour-in chart. The debt snowball worksheet sets out a payoff order for up to ten debts, with your method and extra payment, and a log of each payment.

Does it calculate interest?

No, it's a paper tracker. Write the rate so you can compare debts, and use your lender's statement for the exact balance.

Which planners include it?

The budget, debt payoff, savings challenge, cash stuffing and paycheck budget planners, in their Savings & Debt section.

Can I track student loans or a mortgage?

Yes. Add them as rows. Many people leave the mortgage off the colour-in chart so smaller debts show visible progress.
