How to use it

Getting the most from a tax document checklist.

  1. Cross out what doesn't apply

The checklist is general. Strike through anything that isn't relevant to you and add anything specific, like rental income or foreign accounts.

  2. Start a folder in January

Put the checklist at the front of a folder or digital notebook and drop each document in as it arrives. Tick it off when it's in.

  3. Log deductible expenses through the year

Writing expenses as they happen is far easier than searching statements in April. Mark the receipt column when you've filed the receipt.

  4. Use consistent categories

Match your categories to how you'll file, such as office supplies, mileage, phone, training. Your accountant will thank you.

  5. Check official guidance

What counts as deductible depends on where you live and your situation. Use the checklist to gather things, then check with your tax authority or a professional.
