Who it's for
Classroom teachers, special education teachers and case managers, coaches and club leaders, and tutors who keep families updated. It's especially useful for teachers who need a record ahead of conferences.
Getting the most from a parent communication log.
Log every contact, good news too
Positive calls home matter as much as concerns. A log with both shows a balanced relationship with each family.
Write how you made contact
In the contact column, note the person and the method: "Mum – phone", "Dad – email". It helps if you need to try a different route next time.
Keep the reason factual
Write what happened and what was discussed, briefly and objectively. The log may be read by others.
Always fill in follow-up
"Check in Friday", "sent work home", "no reply, try again". Follow-up is what turns a log into action.
Log the same day
Write it down straight after the call or meeting, while the details are fresh.
Bring it to conferences and IEP meetings
A dated list of every contact shows what's been tried and agreed. It helps you prepare and keeps conversations focused on facts rather than memory.

About this parent communication log template
Need help importing it? See devices and apps or the FAQ.
Why keep a parent communication log?
It gives you a dated record of every contact with families, which helps with follow-up, conferences, IEP meetings and any questions from administrators.
How many entries fit?
Around 25 rows on the printable versions. Many teachers use one log for all classes, in date order.
Should I log emails?
Yes, briefly. Note the date, the parent and the topic so you can find the full email later.
Which planners include it?
The teacher, lesson, special education, preschool, tutor and Sunday school planners, in their Teaching section.
Should I log contact attempts with no answer?
Yes. Note "no answer" or "left voicemail" with the date. A record of attempts matters as much as a record of conversations.
