Who it's for
Vegetable gardeners, allotment holders, people planning a new flower border, families starting a first garden, and homesteaders planning crops for the year. School and community gardens use it to share plans between volunteers, so everyone knows what's planted where and what's due next.
Getting the most from a garden planner.
Choose a scale for the grid
Decide what one square means, such as 30 cm or one foot, and write it at the top. Then measure your beds and draw them in.
Mark sun and shade
Shade the parts of the layout that get less than six hours of sun. It decides what can grow where.
Use symbols on the calendar
S for sow, P for plant out, H for harvest. Use your local frost dates to decide which months.
Rotate crops
Keep last year's layout and avoid planting the same family of vegetables in the same bed two years running.
Plan succession sowing
For salad and quick crops, mark repeat sowings every few weeks on the calendar so you have a steady harvest.
