Who it's for
Homeowners planning a kitchen or bathroom renovation, first-time buyers fixing up a home, landlords between tenants, and DIYers who want to know what a project really cost. It's equally useful for smaller jobs, like repainting a room or replacing a bathroom suite, where a few unexpected costs can quietly double the total.
Getting the most from a renovation budget.
Break the job into small items
"Kitchen" is too big to budget. Split it into cabinets, worktops, appliances, plumbing, electrics, tiling, flooring, paint and labour.
Get three quotes
Write the quote you choose in the quote column and note the others beside it. It makes negotiating easier and shows you a fair price.
Add a contingency line
Renovations almost always find surprises. A contingency of 10 to 20 percent as its own row keeps them from wrecking the budget.
Fill in actual as invoices arrive
Compare actual with quote for each item. Overruns show up early, while you can still save elsewhere.
Record who supplied what
The supplier or contractor column is useful long after the work is done, for warranties, repairs and matching materials.

About this renovation budget template
Need help importing it? See devices and apps or the FAQ.
How do I budget for a renovation?
List every item, get quotes, add a contingency and track actual spending against each quote. This page has columns for all of that.
How many items fit?
Around 25 rows on the printable versions. Use a page per room for bigger projects.
Is there a full renovation planner?
Yes. The home renovation planner has renovation phases, this budget, room layouts and vendor pages, plus dated calendar pages for the project.
Does it work for DIY projects?
Yes. Use the supplier column for where you bought materials and leave labour out.
How much contingency should I add?
Many people add 10 to 20 percent, more for older homes where surprises are likely. Put it on its own row so it isn't spent by accident.
