Guide

How to use a garden journal

A garden journal is a record of what you planted, when, and how it went. That record is what makes next year's garden better, because the best guide to your own plot is what happened in it last year. It isn't a layout app; it's a notebook for planning and remembering.
  1. Fill the planting calendar in winter

List up to ten crops down the side and mark sowing, planting-out and harvest months across the year. Use your local seed packets or extension service for dates.

  2. Sketch your beds on the grid pages

Draw each bed to scale and pencil in what goes where. Keep last year's sketch so you can rotate crops.

  3. Log every plant

The plant log has columns for sown, planted out and harvest dates, plus notes. Variety names are worth writing down.

  4. Track the weekly jobs

The habit tracker comes preset with watering, weeding, harvesting, composting, pest checks and feeding. It shows quickly what's been missed in a hot week.

  5. Write the notes you'll want next spring

Which varieties did well, what bolted, which pests came. Those notes are worth more than any planting chart.

  6. Keep problems on record

Use the notes column in the plant log for problems like slugs, blight or a late frost, and when they appeared. Next year you'll know when to start checking and what to protect.

What to include in a garden journal

A garden planner needs a calendar for timing, a place for layouts and a log for results. This one includes:

Calendar

Weekly and monthly pages

Month calendars for sowing dates and frost dates, and a weekly page for the week's garden jobs. There are no daily pages, so the journal is short and easy to print.

Garden

A 12-month planting calendar, two grid pages for bed layouts and three plant log pages.

  • Garden Layout · 2 pages
  • Plant Log · 3 pages
Habits

  • Habit Tracker · every month

Every section can be switched off in the builder, and sections from other planners can be added.

Digital vs printable garden journal

A garden planner printable is the practical choice for many gardeners: print the planting calendar and plant log on A4 or US Letter, keep them in the shed or greenhouse, and don't worry about muddy fingers.

A digital garden journal is good for photos: paste pictures of seedlings and harvests onto the grid or notes pages in GoodNotes, and you have a visual record of the season. The grid pages are also easy to redraw when plans change.

Questions

Garden journal questions

Is it specific to my climate?

No — you fill in your own crops and dates, so it works anywhere.

Can I add a weekly view?

Weekly pages are on by default.

Is it a garden layout planner?

Partly. There are grid pages for sketching beds by hand, but it doesn't place plants for you or calculate spacing like a garden layout app. It's a journal and planting calendar, which many gardeners use alongside a layout tool.

Is there a free garden journal?

You can build this garden journal and flip through every page in your browser for free, with a watermark. The tabs and links work in the preview, so you can check the layout before you pay. The clean PDF is $12 once, or included in Pro at $49 a year for unlimited planners. There is no free download of the full planner.

Does it work with GoodNotes, Notability, Samsung Notes and e-ink tablets?

Yes. Download the iPad size for GoodNotes, Notability, Noteshelf, Xodo, Collanote or ZoomNotes; the Android size for Samsung Notes, Penly, Flexcil or Xodo; or the E-ink size for reMarkable, Kindle Scribe, Boox and Supernote. The links work in any app that follows PDF links, usually in read mode rather than pen mode. Every size is included in the price.

Can I print the garden journal?

Yes. Choose A5, A4, US Letter or Half Letter in the builder for a printable PDF with a wider inner margin for hole punching. Printable and digital sizes come with the same purchase, so you can use the garden journal on a tablet and print the pages you want on paper.

Is the garden journal dated or undated?

Dated by default, starting in January 2027. You can pick any start month and year (including this month), 12 or 18 months, and Monday or Sunday weeks. Or switch to undated and write the dates in yourself, so a skipped week isn't wasted.

Does the AI fill in the garden journal for me?

Only the goal parts, and only if you want it to. Type up to six goals and the AI writes a milestone for each month and a short action for each week onto your month and week pages, plus a motto for each month. You can edit every line before you download. Everything else, from the calendar pages to the trackers, is yours to fill in by hand. You can try it 3 times a day without an account.

Make it yours in about a minute.

Set your dates, device and goals, flip through the preview free, and pay only when it's right.
