Who it's for
Music students of any age, parents of children learning an instrument, adult beginners, and music teachers who want students to keep a weekly record. Choirs, bands and orchestras can use it for section practice, and adult learners returning to an instrument use it to see steady progress week by week.
Getting the most from a music practice log.
Write the tempo every time
Recording BPM shows steady progress on hard passages, even when it doesn't feel like it.
Give each session a focus
"Bars 12–20, left hand" or "even quavers". A focus makes short practice sessions count.
Short and often beats long and rare
Twenty minutes a day does more than two hours on Sunday. The minutes column shows the pattern.
Bring it to lessons
Teachers can see what was practised and add notes for the week in the teacher notes column.
Total minutes each week
A weekly total is motivating, and many teachers ask for it.
Record yourself once a week
A short recording each week is the best way to hear progress. Note the date of each recording in the focus column.
