Cash Envelope Budget Template (Printable PDF & GoodNotes)

Two pages for cash stuffing. The cash envelope budget records the paycheck date and cash withdrawn, then each envelope's budgeted, stuffed, spent and left amounts, started with common spending categories. Totals at the bottom show what you stuffed, spent and rolled into savings. The envelope ledger tracks money in and out of a single envelope.

What's on it

2 pages, ready to fill in.

  • Page 1, Cash Envelope Budget: Write-in lines for paycheck date and cash withdrawn; a table with columns for envelope, budgeted, stuffed, spent and left (your spending categories); boxes for total stuffed, total spent and rolled to savings

  • A “Month” line at the top, so it works for any month and year

Who it's for

People who overspend on cards, cash stuffing fans, those on a variable income who want to control spending per paycheck, and anyone who wants to feel money leaving their hands.

How to use it

Getting the most from a cash envelope budget.

  1. Only use cash for variable spending

Bills are easier paid by bank transfer. Cash envelopes work best for groceries, fuel, eating out, kids, gifts and personal spending.

  2. Fill in budgeted before payday

Decide each envelope's amount before you go to the bank, so you know exactly how much to withdraw and in which notes.

  3. Keep a ledger per envelope

Print one ledger page for each envelope and keep it inside. Every time you take money out, write it down and the new balance.

  4. When an envelope is empty, stop

That's the rule that makes cash stuffing work. Move money from another envelope on purpose if you must, and write it in both ledgers.

  5. Roll leftovers somewhere useful

At the end of the period, put what's left into savings or a sinking fund and record it in the rolled to savings box.

Questions

About this cash envelope budget template

Need help importing it? See devices and apps or the FAQ.

What is cash stuffing?

A budgeting method where you withdraw your spending money as cash and divide it into labelled envelopes. When an envelope is empty, that category is done until next payday.

Can I change the envelope categories?

Yes. The page starts with common categories; cross out any you don't use and write your own on the blank rows.

Do I need a separate ledger for each envelope?

It helps. One ledger per envelope shows exactly where the cash went. Print as many ledger pages as you have envelopes.

Does it work with digital envelopes?

Yes. If you use separate bank pots or accounts instead of cash, the same page tracks them.
