What's on it

One page, ready to fill in.

  • Write-in lines for date, bedtime, lucid? and sleep quality
  • Lined space for the dream
  • Boxes for people, places and feelings
  • Lined space for what it might mean
  • Undated, so you can print or duplicate it as often as you need

Who it's for

People interested in dreams and their meaning, those practising lucid dreaming, people with recurring dreams or nightmares who want to notice patterns, and writers and artists who use dreams as inspiration.

How to use it

Getting the most from a dream journal.

  1. Write before you check your phone

Dreams fade within minutes of waking. Keep the journal by the bed and write first, even if it's just a few fragments.

  2. Start with feelings and images

If the plot is gone, write how the dream felt and any images you remember. Often more comes back as you write.

  3. Use the three boxes for patterns

People, places and feelings are where recurring themes show up. After a few weeks, read the boxes together and look for repeats.

  4. Leave meaning until later

Fill in "what it might mean" in the evening, or not at all. Your own associations matter more than any dream dictionary.

  5. Note lucid dreams

If you're practising lucid dreaming, the lucid line helps you count how often it happens and what came before it.

Questions

About this dream journal template

Need help importing it? See devices and apps or the FAQ.

How do I start a dream journal?

Keep this page and a pen by your bed and write as soon as you wake up, before you move much or look at your phone. Recall usually improves within a week or two.

What do the people, places and feelings boxes do?

They break the dream into parts you can compare across nights. Recurring people, settings or emotions are the easiest patterns to spot.

Is it useful for lucid dreaming?

Yes. Keeping a dream journal is one of the most common first steps for lucid dreaming, and there's a line to mark lucid dreams.

Is there a dark version?

Yes. If you write on a tablet first thing, the dark theme is easier on your eyes before the lights are on.
