Getting the most from a preschool lesson plan.
Choose the theme first
Seasons, animals, colours, community helpers, transport. A theme ties the week's activities together and gives children something to talk about.
Pick a letter and number that fit
If the theme is farm animals, try the letter F and the number 5 for five little ducks. It makes the week easier to plan.
Balance active and quiet blocks
Read down each day: an active outdoor block after a calm sensory activity, story time after art. Young children need the change of pace.
Use the song all week
Repeating the same song every day builds language and gives children a familiar routine.
Note materials in the boxes
A few words like "playdough, cookie cutters" or "leaf rubbings, crayons" saves a scramble on the morning.
Collect ideas in a theme bank
When you see a good activity, write it on a spare page under the theme it fits. Next time that theme comes round, half the plan is ready.
