Guide

How to use a travel journal

A travel journal keeps the small things photos miss: the meal you didn't expect to love, the stranger who gave directions, the joke that lasted the whole trip. Ten minutes each evening is enough.
  1. Write one entry per day away

Each entry has the date, place, weather and mood, then highlights, food you tried, people you met and a funny moment.

  2. Add a photo or ticket

Every entry has a photo space. Paste a picture on a tablet, or glue in a ticket stub on paper.

  3. Plan the trip in the same book

Trip overviews, 7-day itineraries, packing lists and travel budgets sit in the Travel tab, so planning and memories stay together.

  4. Log every place

The places-I've-been pages build a list of everywhere you've visited, with dates, who you went with and a rating.

  5. Finish with gratitude

On the last night, a gratitude page is a good way to sum up the trip.

What to include in a travel journal

A travel journal should hold memories first and plans second. This one includes:

Calendar

Weekly and monthly pages

Twelve undated month pages for noting when each trip happened. No weekly or daily pages, so the journal is all trips.

  • Trip Overview · 4 pages
  • Itinerary · 4 pages
  • Packing List · 4 pages

  • Trip Memories · 4 pages
Journal

Gratitude & Journal

Affirmations, weekly gratitude pages and 24 open journal pages.

  • Gratitude · every week
  • Journal · 24 pages

Every section can be switched off in the builder, and sections from other planners can be added.

Digital vs printable travel journal

A digital travel journal weighs nothing in your bag and works offline once it's in your note app. Pasting photos straight from your camera roll is the easiest way to fill the photo spaces.

A printed journal makes a lovely keepsake: print the entries on A5, fill them in on the trip, and glue in tickets and postcards.

An example week in a travel journal

One goal, followed through a single week. The milestone and weekly actions are the kind of lines the AI goal step writes onto your month and week pages; the daily notes are what you add by hand.

Goal

Write one journal page every day of the trip

Milestone for July

A full entry for every day in Portugal

This week's actions

  • Write before dinner each evening
  • Paste one photo per entry
  • Add each town to the places log
  • Day 1Lisbon: hot, tired, happy. Highlight: tram 28. Food: custard tarts still warm.

  • Day 3Sintra. People I met: a couple from Ohio on their 40th anniversary.
  • Day 5Porto. Pasted the port cellar ticket. Places log: three towns so far.
  • Day 7Last night. Gratitude page: the trip in ten lines.

Questions

Travel journal questions

How is it different from the travel planner?

The travel planner is for planning: itineraries, budgets and packing. The travel journal is for remembering: entry pages with photo space and a log of places you've been. Both include trip overviews and packing lists.

Can I add my photos?

Yes. In GoodNotes, Notability and most Android note apps you can paste photos onto the photo space on each entry page. Printed, there's room to glue in a photo or ticket stub.

Is there a free travel journal?

You can build this travel journal and flip through every page in your browser for free, with a watermark. The tabs and links work in the preview, so you can check the layout before you pay. The clean PDF is $12 once, or included in Pro at $49 a year for unlimited planners. There is no free download of the full planner.

Does it work with GoodNotes, Notability, Samsung Notes and e-ink tablets?

Yes. Download the iPad size for GoodNotes, Notability, Noteshelf, Xodo, Collanote or ZoomNotes; the Android size for Samsung Notes, Penly, Flexcil or Xodo; or the E-ink size for reMarkable, Kindle Scribe, Boox and Supernote. The links work in any app that follows PDF links, usually in read mode rather than pen mode. Every size is included in the price.

Can I print the travel journal?

Yes. Choose A5, A4, US Letter or Half Letter in the builder for a printable PDF with a wider inner margin for hole punching. Printable and digital sizes come with the same purchase, so you can use the travel journal on a tablet and print the pages you want on paper.

Does the AI fill in the travel journal for me?

Only the goal parts, and only if you want it to. Type up to six goals and the AI writes a milestone for each month and a short action for each week onto your month and week pages, plus a motto for each month. You can edit every line before you download. Everything else, from the calendar pages to the trackers, is yours to fill in by hand. You can try it 3 times a day without an account.

How many pages is the travel journal?

With the default settings it comes to about 176 pages. That includes 12 month pages, the Travel Journal, Travel and Gratitude & Journal pages and 20 notes pages. Switching off sections makes it shorter, and the builder shows the total as you change things.

Make it yours in about a minute.
