How to use a prayer journal

A prayer journal is a place to pray on paper (or on a screen) and a record of what you prayed for. Writing slows prayer down and keeps your mind from wandering, and over a year the answered column on your prayer list becomes its own encouragement.
  1. Set a time and keep it short

Ten minutes in the morning or before bed is enough. The daily page has the day's reading at the top and a prayer and reflection box beneath it.

  2. Read first, then pray

Read the passage on the page, write down a verse or phrase that stood out, then pray in your own words. Some days that's a paragraph; some days it's one line.

  3. Keep a prayer list

Write each request with the date and who it's for. When it's answered, in whatever way, fill in the answered column.

  4. Use the A.C.T.S. pattern when words won't come

Adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication: a sentence for each is a simple structure many people use. The prompts below can help too.

  5. Look back each month

On the monthly review, reread your prayer list and journal pages. Write down what changed and what you're still waiting for.

What to include in a prayer journal

A prayer journal needs room to pray every day and a way to remember what you've prayed for. This one includes:

Calendar

Daily, weekly and monthly pages

Daily pages with that day's Bible reading, a prayer and reflection box, a top three, a to-do list and a grateful-for box. Weekly pages carry any goal actions, such as praying with your family.

Faith

Faith

Three prayer list pages with an answered column, S.O.A.P. study pages that end in prayer, weekly sermon notes, memory verses and a Bible-in-a-year tick list.

  • Bible in a Year · 1 page
  • Prayer List · 3 pages
  • Sermon Notes · every week
  • Scripture Study (S.O.A.P.) · 24 pages
  • Verses to Memorise · 2 pages
Journal

Gratitude & Journal

Weekly gratitude pages and 24 journal pages for longer prayers or reflections, plus affirmation pages.

  • Affirmations · 1 page
  • Gratitude · every week
  • Journal · 24 pages
Review

Monthly Reviews

A monthly review page for looking back at answered prayers and what you're still praying for.

  • Monthly Review · every month

Every section can be switched off in the builder, and sections from other planners can be added.

Digital vs printable prayer journal

A digital prayer journal is always with you on your tablet, so a request someone shares after church goes straight on the list. The file stays on your own device and in your own note app; we never see what you write in it.

A printable prayer journal suits quiet time with a pen and a paper Bible. Print it on A5 or Half Letter for a small binder, or choose the E-ink format for a Kindle Scribe or reMarkable, which feels close to paper. You can switch off sermon notes or the reading plan in the builder for a simpler journal.

An example week in a prayer journal

One goal, followed through a single week. The milestone and weekly actions are the kind of lines the AI goal step writes onto your month and week pages; the daily notes are what you add by hand.

Goal

Milestone for March

Morning prayer on at least 25 days this month

This week's actions

  • Set the journal by the coffee maker
  • Pray through the prayer list on Mondays and Thursdays
  • Write one answered prayer each week
  • MondayTen minutes before work. Prayed through the list: six names. Added a new request for a friend's surgery.
  • TuesdayRead the day's passage. One line in the reflection box about trusting in a hard week.
  • WednesdayOverslept. Prayed on the commute and wrote two lines in the evening.
  • ThursdayPrayer list again. Friend's surgery went well; wrote the date in the answered column.
  • SaturdayLonger journal page using the A.C.T.S. pattern. Six mornings this week.

Questions

Prayer journal questions

Is it a guided prayer journal?

Partly. The S.O.A.P. pages walk you through scripture, observation, application and prayer, and each daily page has a reading and a prayer box. There are no printed devotional texts, so you pray in your own words. There are prompts on this page if you want a starting point.

Is it for women or for men?

Both. It starts in a soft blush theme, but you can switch to any of the themes, including dark and plain e-ink ones, and put your own name and title on the cover.

How do I start a prayer journal?

Pick a regular time, open today's page, read the passage, then write a short prayer in your own words. Start a prayer list with the people and situations on your mind. Ten minutes a day is plenty, and missed days don't matter: just turn to today.

Is there a free prayer journal?

You can build this prayer journal and flip through every page in your browser for free, with a watermark. The tabs and links work in the preview, so you can check the layout before you pay. The clean PDF is $12 once, or included in Pro at $49 a year for unlimited planners. There is no free download of the full planner.

Does it work with GoodNotes, Notability, Samsung Notes and e-ink tablets?

Yes. Download the iPad size for GoodNotes, Notability, Noteshelf, Xodo, Collanote or ZoomNotes; the Android size for Samsung Notes, Penly, Flexcil or Xodo; or the E-ink size for reMarkable, Kindle Scribe, Boox and Supernote. The links work in any app that follows PDF links, usually in read mode rather than pen mode. Every size is included in the price.

Can I print the prayer journal?

Yes. Choose A5, A4, US Letter or Half Letter in the builder for a printable PDF with a wider inner margin for hole punching. Printable and digital sizes come with the same purchase, so you can use the prayer journal on a tablet and print the pages you want on paper.

Is the prayer journal dated or undated?

Dated by default, starting in January 2027. You can pick any start month and year (including this month), 12 or 18 months, and Monday or Sunday weeks. Or switch to undated and write the dates in yourself, so a skipped week isn't wasted.

Does the AI fill in the prayer journal for me?

Only the goal parts, and only if you want it to. Type up to six goals and the AI writes a milestone for each month and a short action for each week onto your month and week pages, plus a motto for each month. You can edit every line before you download. Everything else, from the calendar pages to the trackers, is yours to fill in by hand. You can try it 3 times a day without an account.

Make it yours in about a minute.

Set your dates, device and goals, flip through the preview free, and pay only when it's right.
